interview with William Roger Holman interview was first published in July
2008. William Roger Holman is the
author of Orphans' Nine
Commandments.
Where
were you born and raised?
I
was born... Roger Bechan ... in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Raised in three different orphanages: Ok
Society for the Friendless, The Baptist Orphanage in Ok City, and West Ok Home
for White Children in Helena, Ok. In and out of six foster homes... released
from last orphanage at age 11 under and Indenture Contract and adopted by the
Holman family at age 13.
What
was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?
Wrote
first chapter of Orphans' Nine
Commandments
(TCU Press, 2007, hardback) when I was a senior in high school.
Which
writers have influenced you the most?
Chekhov,
Sarah Orne Jewett, Willa Cather, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Joseph Conrad, Dickens.
What
kind of things do you write?
Short
stories of orphan life in the Great Depression.
What
are you working on now?
Book
of short stories.
What
is your writing day like?
Usually
write from 8:00 am to 12:00... Mon-Friday. Spend every other week... rewriting.
What’s
the most exciting thing about writing for you?
Creating
a vivid image in prose from one's memory and research into the past.
What’s
the most frustrating thing about writing for you?
Editing,
rewriting & finding a publisher.
What’s
the best piece of feedback that you’ve had from your audience?
Hundreds
of letters and emails from readers who have read The Orphans
Nine Commandments.
Do
you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your
own creativity?
Write
for my own creative needs.
Do
you have any short stories or poems published?
Have
published other books under publishing name: Roger Beacham, Publisher.
