“Visigoth” is the title of Gary Amdahl’s debut collection of
short stories. The Visigoths of history are famous for disrupting the Roman
Empire, and it’s been reported that the protagonists of Gary Amdahl’s tales
also have a tendency to resort to violence when life spins out of control. The
title story features a hockey player who can’t understand that his relationship
with an English professor has ended. “The Flyweight” features a champion high
school wrestler who has to fight his own demons when he develops schizophrenia.
This volume also includes the novella “Free Fall”, which tells of an escalating
of violence in a lumber town. This dissection of the modern American male is
