A Flavour of the Book: “Will turned his back on her, looking at the painting over the mantel. It was a triptych, three canvases hinged together to make one image when it was open, another image when it was closed. He had always assumed that she liked the duplicity of the piece. It was just like Angie, one thing inside, another out.”
The Authortrek View: This
novel is aptly named, as there are a number of puzzling (but hugely satisfying)
twists and turns in the plot. For
instance, when John Shelley comes out of jail, he finds that he has become the
victim of identity theft – except that this is a thief that leaves him with an
outstanding credit report! Who has
been walking around in his shoes? Karin
Slaughter successfully turns all the normal rules regarding the police
procedural on their head, as detective Michael Ormewood is shocked to discover
the latest in a series of killings in his own backyard... As well as being a master of plot,
Karin Slaughter is also superb at creating characters that you really care
about, despite their occasional propensity for doing the wrong thing. It helps that each of the main
protagonists have shady pasts, that Karin Slaughter reveals bit by bit. Hopefully, we’ll see some of these
characters again in future books, those that survive… Despite her name, this is
no blood and guts book either – Karin Slaughter only provides the bloody
details that are necessary for her plot.
She has also done her research very well, as Triptych is a very
convincing police procedural. To
conclude, this is a very brilliant crime thriller from a master of American
Noir.
