Toby
Litt
was born in Bedford in 1968, and grew up in nearby Ampthill. His father is an antiques
dealer, and his mother worked at Cranfield University. He studied English at
Worcester College, Oxford University. Toby Litt had started his literary
adventures by writing poetry, but by the time he left university, he began to
move more into prose. He has never published his early novel “The Lost Notebook
of Babel”. He was also a student on Malcolm Bradbury’s Creative Writing MA at
the University of East Anglia. In 1995, he won the Curtis Brown Fellowship. The
following year saw the publication of his first book, “Adventures
in Capitalism”, a collection of short stories inspired by the 3 years he
lived in Prague. 1997 saw the publication of his excellent first novel, “Beatniks”.
“Corpsing”, probably the novel for which he is best known, was published in
2000. 2001 saw the publication of his next novel, “deadkidsongs”.
Toby Litt’s 2nd collection of short stories, “Exhibitionism”,
was published in 2002. In 2003, Toby Litt’s reputation was cemented by Granta
naming him as one of the 20 “Best of Young British Novelists”. Two more novels
followed: “Finding
Myself” (2003), “Ghost
Story” (2004), and “Hospital”
(2007). Toby Litt is currently naming his books alphabetically. A Toby Litt
short story was also included in the anthology “All Hail
the New Puritans” in 2000. Toby Litt has previously worked as a bookseller,
a teacher, and a subtitler. He now lives in London. Visit Toby Litt’s homepage:
