“The Sultan’s Seal” is the title of Jenny White’s debut
novel. It is the year ‘Rumi’ (1886 in the Christian calendar), and the setting
is Istanbul. The naked body of a white woman is found in the Bosphorus… Around
her neck is a pendant containing the Sultan’s seal, which is only found on
special possessions in the imperial household… The city magistrate, Kamil
Pasha, believes that there are echoes with the murder of an English governess 8
years before… There are also links to the woman Jaanan, a member of Ottaman
high society who is currently in disgrace. Kamil teams up with Sybil, the
daughter of the English ambassador, who has access to the court. She helps
Kamil penetrate the harem, and gradually falls in love with him… But have they
made too many powerful enemies? To find out more about the author, you must
