“The Observations” is the title of Jane Harris’ debut novel.
It’s set in Scotland in 1863, and the Irish Bessie Buckley is determined to
escape from her murky past in Glasgow. Bessie takes a job as a maid for the
beautiful Arabella, in a big house outside Edinburgh. Bessie is intrigued by
her new employer, mainly by her strange requests, especially when she is asked
to keep a diary of her most intimate thoughts…And then there’s Arabella’s
obsession with Nora, a previous maid who died in mysterious circumstances… It
doesn’t help when Bessie’s past begins to catch up with her also… To find out

“It is my considered opinion that
'Observations' would make an excellent musical. As I read the book all kinds of sets, lyrics and tunes
swirled around in my head. Bessy
is already a singer and she could have some sweet, sneaky and sassy songs. There are is an Ahh, Hahh song for the
Reverend!” – Authortrek.com reader Jan
