“The Mathematics of Love” is Emma Darwin’s debut novel. It’s
the story of Stephen Fairhurst, a Waterloo veteran, who, in 1819, returns to
Kersey Hall in Suffolk. Stephen is determined to forget the horrors of war, and
his one true great love. He becomes friendly with Lucy Durward, but at first,
he is unable to touch upon the horrors of the past in his correspondence with
her. In 1976, Kersey Hall is the failed rural school to which teenager Anna
Ware is sent. The summer is scorching, and Anna is bored, but soon she finds
herself entangled in the lives of 2 men: war photographer Theo, and Stephen
Fairhurst… According to Emma Darwin’s agent, this is “an extraordinarily moving account of war and the pain of
loss, the heat of passion and the redemptive power of love”. To find out more
