“The Killing Jar” is Nicola Monaghan’s debut novel. It’s the
story of Kerry –Ann Hill from Nottingham, who grows up with her junkie mother,
not knowing who her father is. Her neighbour, Mrs Ivanovich, provides morbid
fascination to the 5 year-old Kerrie-Ann with her collection of butterflies,
which she has caught and killed herself… Life doesn’t run smoothly for
Kerrie-Ann, as, by the time she’s 12, she’s already been sent to sell drugs in
the playground by her mother’s boyfriend, been beaten up by a customer, has had
to hide some stolen guns, while spending some time in a girl’s home at the same
time as developing a taste for whiz. Her only ally is Mark who becomes her
lover as they cruise through the rave scene of the 80s. Yet it’s easy to lose
control in this world, and a butchered dog may be the sign of things to come…
Unless Kerrie-Ann can utilise all that Mrs. Ivanovich taught her… To find out
