“The Diamond of Drury Lane” is
Julia Golding’s debut novel. It’s the story of Cat Royal, a foundling who lives
in the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane in the 1790s. The theatre is led by Sir Richard
Sheridan (the politician and playwright), who adopts Cat when she is found on
the steps of the theatre as a baby. The theatre’s actors and backstage folk
become Cat’s family. She’s also mates with Syd Fletcher, who leads a gang of
Covent Garden lads, who often indulge in bare fisted fights. And then, of
