“The Demon and the City” is the
title of Liz Williams’ second Inspector Chen novel, the character that appeared
in her short story “Adventures
in the Ghost Trade”. The demon of the title is Inspector Chen’s work
partner, Zhu Irzh. While Inspector Chen is on holiday, Zhu becomes embroiled in
a mystery concerning the missing body of a murdered young socialite, and the
strange experiments conducted by a beautiful, young heiress. The Singapore
Three police department suspect Zhu, and it doesn’t help that Zhu’s baser
instincts seem to be getting the better of him… However, when Chen returns, he
suspects the work of a more malignant power: the Celestial Realms, which are
leaving death and destruction in their wake…
