“The Chess Machine” is the
title of Robert Lohr’s debut novel. It tells the story of Wolfgang von Kempelen
and his chess-playing Mechanical Turk. According to the British publishers, the
novel concerns “the inventor, a dwarf, a pair of aristocratic siblings, a
beautiful housemaid and a cheeky boy in a series of murders, a wonderful love
story, a great roof top chase and even an eighteenth century orgy.” The main
character is Tibor, the dwarf who excels at chess, and so von Kempelen is eager
that he sit inside the machine. Tibor is not so sure that he wants to take part
in such a fraud, but after he accidentally kills a man, he accepts von
Kempelen’s offer of help. Not that von Kempelen has engineered this situation,
for the Turk ultimately curses all those who encounter it…Although Wikipedia implies that a dwarf
was not needed to play von Kempelen’s machine, so Tibor is merely part of
Robert Lohr’s fancy. The real Turk went on to beat the likes of Benjamin
Franklin and Napoleon. It’s a fascinating tale, which Robert Lohr has
embellished even further to the delight of the British publishers, who are
convinced that the book will be a huge hit. For more details about the author,
