“The Brief History of the Dead” is the first novel by Kevin
Brockmeier to be published in the UK. It’s the story of Laura Byrd, and her
dreadful predicament. Three weeks previously, she and her friends had found
themselves isolated and alone in Antarctica. The others set out to find help,
but Laura has to finally acknowledge that they are not coming back. She
collects her few remaining supplies, and sets out on an extraordinary journey.
The novel also tells of the city of the dead: with Luka Sims seeing more and
more people arriving (and disappearing) every day… Their story is inextricably
linked to Laura’s journey. Part of the plot sounds like Mary Shelley’s “The
Last Man”, only better written. Part of the first chapter was published in “The
New Yorker” in 2003, also entitled “The Brief History of the Dead”. To find out
