The White King Gyorgy Dragoman

A Flavour of the Book: “he began to smell like rotten butter, and his movements seemed to speed up as he kept cornering me and capturing more of my pieces, he even held his head a bit differently, as if it was he could do not to laugh…”

The Authortrek View: The White King is breathlessly narrated by an eleven-year-old boy called Djata, whose father has been taken away, although it’s several months before he discovers that his father has been arrested, and is currently being forced to labour in what can only be wretched circumstances at the Danube canal.  His mother tries to get by as best as she can, but it’s more difficult due to the frosty relations she has with her father-in-law.  Djata is desperate to see his father again, but he also gets mixed up in his neighbourhood gangs.  Djata finds that life in a totalitarian state is very unfair, in more ways than one.  Along the way, he has fantastical adventures, including an encounter with a chess-playing automaton… With its childish yet strident narrator, The White King will doubtlessly appeal to lovers of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.  However, I was not wholly convinced or moved by Gyorgy Dragoman’s narrative, and my sympathies were most likely killed off due to the scene where Djata rather improbably gets his limbs tangled up with Iza’s.
