A Flavour of the Book: “Only one thing can send the Kraken back to sleep,” said Faro, in a low, toneless voice. “A boy and a girl must be sacrificed to him…”
The Authortrek View: The Deep is a brilliantly
written fantasy thriller. Sapphy,
along with her brother Conor and Faro, must do battle with the Kraken, to send
him back to sleep before he can wreak even more devastation. Only this Kraken is not what you’d
expect, as he’s a sly and slippery beast…
The dangerous Ervys of the Mer is also growing in power and confidence,
and that does not bode well for Sapphy.
Equally as spellbinding as these otherworldly concerns are the travails
within Sapphy and Conor’s family, as Roger’s usurpation of their father comes
to a climax. Sapphy is desperate
for her father to return home, but can he be bound by more than Mer laws? Helen Dunmore’s prose is elegant and
easy to read, and she really keeps the story flowing well. The tone of the story and its setting
reminds me of Katherine Roberts’ Echorium sequence, and both are better writers
than one J. K. Rowling. Although I
hadn’t read any of the previous novels in the Ingo series, I did not get lost,
as there are several references to events in the previous books, although this
exposition is woven so seamlessly into the novel that it is hardly
noticeable. Helen Dunmore has
created such powerful characters that they carry the novel along to its
resolution, even beyond the cataclysmic battle with the Kraken. It looks as though Helen Dunmore has
set the scene for another Ingo novel, and that can only be a good thing, as The
Deep is a fantastic and lyrical read from a superbly gifted writer.
