A Flavour of the Book: “A naked woman hangs by her wrists from a roof beam running across the room. Steel handcuffs run from one hand to the other, looping through an eyelet of metal cable lashed around the beam. I can see her pale skin is rubbed red and raw…”
The Authortrek View: This is a fairly run-of-the-mill crime thriller, e.g. ex-FBI agent talks to killer behind bars in a bid to find out what he did with all his victims’ bodies, which is all very Silence of the Lambs, especially with Alex Rourke having a guilty secret that makes him vulnerable… Having said that, The Darkness Inside is a very convincing representation of the U. S. criminal justice system, so British author John Rickards has done his research well. Fans of American Noir may not find The Darkness Inside to be gritty enough, for although the novel deals with the worst of human depravity, the language used is too clean and sanitised, particularly with regards to John Rickards’ descriptions of crime scenes. The Darkness Inside only really kicks off about half way through the novel, as Alex is framed for murder and has to go on the run, while also trying to rescue one of Cody Williams’ victims. However, the tragic resolution of the novel is a real killer, which has been expertly engineered by John Rickards.
