A Flavour of the Book: "You told me you saw the big balloon slowly fall. You were standing at the window drinking coffee as it came into view. First the basket. People laughing, then worried as they realized they were falling..."
The Authortrek View: This is an excellent collection of short stories from one of Britain's most promising authors. I've been following Jai Clare's career for quite a while, so it's good to see that her ability has been recognized by Elastic Press, the publishers of her debut collection of short stories, The Cusp of Something (which uses a splendid painting by Ray Donley as its cover). All the old favourites are here, from the poignancy of Ramblista, the subtle delights of Bone on Bone, the cruelty of The Lightest Blue, to the mystery of The Land is Lighting. Jai Clare's disturbing tales, such as A Man of Shapes, are so vivid that they stay in the memory a long time, and it is sheer bliss to be able to revisit them. Jai Clare splendidly brings her exotic locations to life, as well as inhabiting them with some truly great characters. If anything, there is a danger that The Cusp of Something may even be too rich, and may drive the reader into a fever if gulped down in one go. So I would advise the reader to take their time here, to savour each and every one of these delicious stories.
