The Bird Room by Chris Killen

The Bird Room is an excellent debut novel. Chris Killen successfully and very humorously conveys his protagonist's twisted male psyche. Will is always pushing away would-be lovers with his paranoid jealousy and insecurity. Therefore, he can't truly believe it when the beautiful Alice falls in love with him. However, she has her own hang-ups, so they seem well matched. Yet, it's Alice's revelation that she once performed in a blue movie for one of her former boyfriends that really sends Will over the edge, as he tries to hunt down the offending video on the internet. It also doesn't help that Will has introduced Alice to a flamboyant artist friend, also named Will, who once bit the head off a budgie... The Bird Room is a very funny, clever novel. However, Chris Killen has tried arch to be too with the structure of his debut, with the result that it sometimes obstructs rather than illuminates the story.
