THE TESSERACT by ALEX GARLAND
THE TESSERACT is Garland's
follw-up to his highly successful THE
BEACH. This novel is set in Manila, not a million miles away from the scene
of Garland's first novel. With this book, Alex Garland has obviously aimed to
produce a work of high literature. However, I unfortunately listened to BBC
Radio 4's adaptation of the novel, and couldn't make head or tail of it. I
think this is largely because the novel is literally awash with flashbacks
involving many characters, which made it very difficult to follow on radio. If
maybe a little more money had been spent on the production, it would have been
so much better. Employing more actors would have been a good idea, because the use
of a single voice just wasn't fit to convey the complexities of this novel.
But, if it's a good review of the novel that you're after, then look no further
than Amazon.com, where one critic has written: "Sell everything you have
to buy this book!... Alex Garland has proved the critics wrong - he really can
write!" By a strange coincidence, this critic's name just happens to be
Alex Garland.
What a small world we live in! What are the chances of that happening?! etc.
