A Flavour of the Book: “he threw back his head and
laughed aloud, and the last few stragglers leaving the store glanced at him in
surprise. To her discomfort, Kathy
saw two of the women from the ground floor, their heads close together,
whispering to each other as they went out…”
The Authortrek View: Kathy Burton is fed up of
working on her father’s farm. It
doesn’t help that her father is a sour, unpleasant man, who would have
preferred to have borne a son to help with the farm, and that Kathy’s labour
goes unpaid. Working in the
nearest city, Lincoln, is a much more attractive prospect for Kathy when she
finally wins her battle of wills with her father and resolves to leave. She’s concerned that her father may
turn on her mother, but she knows that their neighbours, the Robinsons, will
look out for her. Indeed, Morry
Robinson even asks Kathy to marry him, but it’s a proposal that she cannot
accept, as she does not love Morry, and knows from her parents’ example that a
marriage without love is definitely not something that she wants. The Robinsons take no offence at her
rejection of Morry, and even arrange for Kathy to live in Lincoln with Jemima,
Morry’s aunt. Jemima finds Kathy a
job at the department store at which she also works. However, this is Kathy’s first time at living in the big
city, and she’s still quite naïve, as her head is soon turned by the handsome
manager, Tony Kendall, who is notorious for having gone through several women
already…Still, Tony affections for Kathy seem genuine, but there’s still one or
two things that could yet come between them, such as the Second World War…
Sing
As We Go is an excellent story, and Margaret Dickinson has successfully
brought the era back to life. The
setting and the narrative pace reminded me much of one of my favourite books,
Caron Harrison’s Shades
of Grey. Indeed, Margaret
Dickinson could tell James Patterson a thing or two about how to pace a
romance, as she always keeps the twists and turns coming at just the right
speed. In addition to this,
Margaret Dickinson is an expert narrator, constantly providing many hooks to
which to tether her reader.
Perhaps this big book does flag a bit in the middle, but things soon
pick up again as Margaret Dickinson very ably sets up the reader for the big
finale. Margaret Dickinson is also
very good at characterisation, allowing some sympathy for even her most
unappealing protagonist… Sing As We Go is a very entertaining, and
thrilling read.
