Sian Pattenden is the author of
“The
Awful Tale of Agatha Bilke” and “Operation Ward 10:
Agatha Strikes Again”. Sian has written for a variety of publications, such
as “NME”, “The Face”, “The Independent”, “The Guardian”, amongst others. She
joined “Smash Hits” at the age of 18, making her their youngest staff writer.
In 1992, Sian left “Smash Hits” to go freelance, and later she became music
editor for “Just Seventeen”. Her music journalism led her to write “How To Make
It In The Music Business”, and to her appearing on TV and radio as a pop
pundit. From 1995 to 1997, Sian was in the band “Casino”, and later
went on to join another band called “100% Ponies”. She started writing earlier,
and at the age of 16, she became the youngest playwright to have a play on the
Edinburgh Fringe with “Steven Newman Doesn’t Eat Quiche”. However, Sian
Pattenden also had an earlier career as an actress, with the high point being
her portrayal of Jane Eyre as a child in a TV adaptation. I also remember her
appearance as “Young Tegan” in the 1983 “Doctor Who” story “Mawdryn Undead”,
which probably wasn’t her most glorious hour, but at least she had to endure it
along with EastEnders’ Lucy Benjamin, who starred in the same scene. Sian has
recently illustrated some playing cards for “Unhappy Families” by Portobello
Games, and it looks as though she has also done the illustrations for “The
Awful Tale of Agatha Bilke”, her debut novel. Sian Pattenden is also the author of “How to
Make It in the Music Business”.
