Shifra Shomron interview

This interview with Shifra Shomron, author of "Grains Of Sand: The Fall Of Neve Dekalim", was first published in March 2007.

Grains of Sand Shifra ShomronWhere were you born and raised?

I was born in Wisconsin and raised in Israel.

What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?

I started writing when I was 15 - since I felt a need to express myself.

Which writers have influenced you the most?

Mark Twain - to write what you know, even if it is commonplace, and to write it flowingly.  J.R.R. Tolkien - to enrich a book via language, history, songs.

What kind of things do you write?

I write parodies, poems and articles related to the community of Gush Katif, Israel.

What are you working on now?

I just published my first novel, "Grains Of Sand: The Fall Of Neve Dekalim" by Mazo Publishers, (2007) available via Amazon and Barnes&Noble.  ISBN 978-9657344194  My book tells the story of an Israeli family living in Neve Dekalim, and we follow each family member from pre-Intifada until Disengagement.

What is your writing day like?

When I get an idea/ feel the urge to write, I sit down - generally in the evening, and write longhand.  It doesn't take me very long to write; the ideas generally flow.

What’s the most exciting thing about writing for you?

To be able to move people, to make them experience what I saw and felt.

What’s the most frustrating thing about writing for you?

When I'm told that the word I used is not a word often used - and I have to search for a different one which is better known, but rather clips my style.

What’s the best piece of feedback that you’ve had from your audience?

When readers requested I email them any and every piece I write.

Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?

My first priority is to express myself, but as I rarely write merely for writing's sake, I also write for a particular audience:  friends of Israel.
