'So I was motoring, as much as you can motor in strappy high-heeled sandals, across the room. He was in deep conversation with a middle-aged man, but I quickly took care of the situation. "You," I said. "Someone just told me you were fascinating. I hope you won't disappoint me."'
This is an eclectic book, unsure of whether it wants to be a novel or just a collection of journalism. Which, in a way, it is, since it is based on Bushnell's regular column. It also seems very American, with lots of characters willing to talk about sex, but unable to act upon their own feelings. The television adaptation has done a very good job of creating a narrative out of this hotpotch, and by concentrating on the four women. The narrator would either appear to be Candace Bushnell herself, or her fictional creation, Carrie (who dates Mr. Big). However, there are very many moments of truth which translate well across the ocean, and I personally found the chapter on 'Bicycle Boys' to be very amusing and a cause for some good old fashioned introspection.
