“Seeds of Greatness” is the title of Jon Canter’s debut
novel. Two friends grow up in a North London Jewish suburb (possibly Hendon,
like Naomi Alderman’s “Disobedience” –
ed). David is bright, likes to please his parents, and is destined to do great
things. Jack is intellectually challenged, mischievous, and gets expelled from
school. He also gets famous as a TV star, while David supplements his poor
bookshop pay by writing the odd radio play here and there. So when Jack dies in
his swimming pool at only 49, his wife and publisher commission the nice,
discreet David to write his authorised biography. This goes swimmingly, except
that David writes the truth about their 40-year friendship, the sex and drugs
and jealously, in a futile bid to get Jack out of his system… To find out more
