“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”
is the title of Paul Torday’s debut novel. It’s the story of Dr. Alfred Jones,
a shy and retiring middle-aged scientist who works for the National Centre for
Fisheries Excellence. He becomes involved in an improbable project to introduce
salmon into the Yemen. The novel is written as a “report into the circumstances surrounding the decision to
introduce salmon in the Yemen”. The publishers describe the novel as a witty
and gentle satire. It features a wide range of fantastic characters, such as a
prime minister, a sheikh, and an Al Quaeda hitman. To find out more about the

Authortrek reader Rodney Keeble
writes: “Absolutely the best modern novel I have read in ages. A friend read it in one sitting it is so good. I took two sittings. The characters are entirely believable,
the situations they find themselves in and the happenings seem very true to
life. The scientist Alfred Jones
comes across as rather a Pooterish character, his wife quite ghastly, my only
regret that the director of communications didn't meet the fate of his
employer. A truly great debut novel and I
am already looking forward the the author's next one due out next year.”
