Robyn Young is the author of “Brethren”
and “Crusade” (2007),
the first 2 books in a trilogy set at the time of the crusades. The story
concerns 2 main characters, representatives of the West and the East. We first
meet the Scot Will Campbell at the age of 13, who is left to the care of the
Knights Templar as his father fights in the Holy Land (Scotland makes me think
of Rosslyn Chapel, but that wasn’t built until the 15th century, and
the novel is set in the 13th century - ed). There is apparently a
tragedy in his past that haunts Will. We see him grow up, and fall in love with
Elwen, as he battles to fall in line with the mysterious Templars. The East is
represented by Baybars, a former slave, who has risen to power through his
ruthlessness. He is determined to rid his land of the crusaders, especially the
feared Templars. However, the hunt is on for a mysterious document that may
bring peace to both sides.
Robyn Young is 29 years old. She lives in Hove. She is a
graduate of the University of Sussex’s creative writing masters degree. She has
previously worked as a folk singer, and has organised music festivals. She has
travelled a great deal in Europe and Egypt (where Baybars is still regarded as
a hero). Robyn Young was inspired to write the trilogy by the Arthurian novels
of Bernard Cornwell. She teaches creative writing part time in Brighton.
