Rhett DeVane interview

Where were you born and raised?

In a small town in the panhandle of Florida—Chattahoochee. This is a town with a state mental institution on the main drag. The town provides the setting for my fiction novels.

What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?

I can’t recall a time when I didn’t create stories. As soon as I could write, I started putting them on paper.

Which writers have influenced you the most?

Anne Tyler, Connie Mae Fowler, Fannie Flagg

What kind of things do you write?

I write mainstream fiction set in the Deep South.

What are you working on now?

Currently, I am working on a short-fiction anthology, editing a couple of novels, and starting another. I am seeking agent representation for my third novel. Also, I will be speaking at the Harriette Austin Writers Conference at the University of Georgia on July the 21st.

What is your writing day like?

I steal little bits of time between work and other responsibilities. I try to spend at least one hour a day writing or revising.

What’s the most exciting thing about writing for you?

Having people read and enjoy my work. I love talking to groups, and have been invited to a number of book club meetings.

What’s the most frustrating thing about writing for you?

The business/promotion part. No one prepares an author for the amount of effort that is required.

What’s the best piece of feedback that you’ve had from your audience?

I am thrilled when readers comment about how my writing brings varied emotions into play. My words might make them laugh out loud one moment, and cry the next. Many times, I have heard “your characters are so real!”

Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?

My fiction seems to appeal to primarily females, though I have had good feedback from men and women. It seems to cut across age lines, as I have had teenagers to seniors as readers.
