Rachel Zadok is the author of “Gem Squash
Tokoloshe”. She has Richard & Judy to thank for her publishing
contract, as Rachel made it into the last 5 of their “How to get Published…”
competition in 2004. However, prior to this, she had moved from South Africa to
London due to her husband’s work commitments (he’s a doctor), and she had
already decided that she would take the opportunity to work on her novel. She
worked as a waitress in a restaurant at night, and wrote during the day. Rachel
also attended City University’s Novel Writing course, which helped her with the
book. Well, that was the plan, but one day, she was struggling with the novel,
and committed the sin (for a home worker) of switching on the TV. However, she
meant that she caught the announcement of Richard & Judy’s “How to get
Published…” competition. Over 46,000 writers entered the competition. So
impressed were Pan Macmillan by her entry, that they gave her a £20,000.00
advance to complete the novel. Rachel Zadok’s success has now been cemented by
the fact that “Gem Squash Tokoloshe” has been nominated for the Whitbread First
Novel Award (with results to be announced in January). Rachel Zadok previously
worked as a graphic designer in South Africa.
