“Poppy Shakespeare” is the title of Clare Allan’s debut
novel. The Dorothy Fish is a day hospital in North London, deep inside the
British mental health system. N has been there for 13 years, smoking in the
common room and swapping medication. Then in walks Poppy Shakespeare, with her
6-inch skirt and 12-inch heels, who astonishes N by declaring that she is not
mad and that she wants to return to the ‘real’ world. All of the other patients
in the Dorothy Fish are hugely relieved when they discover they have not got
any better in their annual assessments, because none of them ever wants to
leave. Despite her bafflement at Poppy’s attitude, N agrees to help get Poppy
her freedom. But are they crazy enough to upset the system? “Poppy Shakespeare”
looks to be a brilliant debut. To find out more about the author, you must
