Philip Gilliver interview

Where were you born and raised?Philip Gilliver

I was born in Wolverhampton.  Did a fair part of my growing up in Wrexham in North Wales, which is where I live now.

What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?

It was probably reading that got me into writing.  The more I read, the more I kept thinking to myself ‘I would love to do this.’

Which writers have influenced you the most?

Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams.  I like the idea of looking at the world sideways.

What kind of things do you write?

Comedy/Fantasy and Fantasy/Comedy. I have been known to write children’s books, Comedy/Sci-Fi, the odd script and short stupid rhyme.

What are you working on now?

I’m finishing off a book called ‘Dreamspiller’.  Then possibly the next book in my ‘Jurassic Dave’ series.

What is your writing day like?

Mad.  I write and then I find something to do while I’m thinking about the next bit; washing up, vacuuming, DIY.  Then after a burst of inspiration I do another thousand words.

What’s the most exciting thing about writing for you?

Writing just to find out what happens next, watching things happen to your characters that they weren’t expecting.  At least that’s what happens to me.

What’s the most frustrating thing about writing for you?

That awful writer’s block, and those brown A4 envelopes that you get through the door with your handwriting on the front of them.

What’s the best piece of feedback that you’ve had from your audience?

‘If this was in a bookstore, I would definitely buy this!’ and ‘I read this and was completely enchanted by it!’

Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?

A bit of both I think. If you write to please your self, at least you know you are going to please 0000000000000000.1 percent of the reading population.

Do you have a homepage?

All my books are visible at myspace.com/dreamspiller
