Um, The Parasite is really rather excellent. I've
only just finished it, and the adrenaline is still a-pumping in my veins.
Jack Smith is a comet miner. A hazardous profession, especially when his
employers don't care one jot about him, but lucrative if one happens to find
the right seam. Unfortunately for Jack, a primitive alien life-form
manages to burrow into him also. There will be consequences for the whole
Earth, for the parasite is very infectious...
Jack is forced to go on the run, pursued by his unscrupulous employers, who are eager to eradicate all links with him. Also chasing Smith are the agents of World Health, who are determined to establish the cause of the infection and to destroy it. There are the familiar Asher themes and motifs, such as the golems, the surgical use of laser weaponry, fascinating biological entities, and evolution. Neal Asher seems to know quite a great deal of the history of disease, and how past oppressive regimes have used outbreaks to suit their own ends. In all, this makes for a highly thrilling, intelligent action adventure, the best I've read by Asher so far. If you can get past the garish artwork by Ralph Horsely, then what you're left with is a very exciting narrative carried along by superb characters. Once again, Neal Asher gives his reader a meal of such exquisite taste that you're left like Oliver, desiring more.
