Overexposure Hugh Rifkind

A Flavour of the book: “In the film they are to make of my life, it turns out that I am not to be played by Jude Law at all… I am to be played by Dean Gaffney…  Dean f*cking Gaffney, can you believe it?  Once Robbie Jackson from EastEnders… In person, he’s probably lovely.  In character, he had hair like a footballer and skin like a leper in an oil-slick…”

The Authortrek View: At first it seems as though Overexposure is caught in the very superficiality of the world that it is portraying, and it takes quite a while before you sympathise with the main character, Macaulay Lewis.  Overexposure features a whole host of celebrities, who are employed for comic effect  (although Hugo Rifkind never quite gets Graham Norton’s voice right).  Inevitably, with so much humour thrown in, some of the jokes fall flat, but there are some great laughs to be had from Overexposure.  In particular, I found it very amusing that Mac’s girlfriend, Lucy, doesn’t even know his name.  In contrast to the light humour, there is a concurrent plotline featuring a serial rapist that sits somewhat uncomfortably within the novel, which was not all that credible and could have been handled a tad more sensitively, à la Serena Mackesy in The Temp.  The plot of Overexposure is not overly convincing either.  However, Overposure is very entertaining, and Hugo Rifkind has succeeded in producing a fun, frothy read for the Heat generation.
