“One Life” is Rebecca Frayn’s
debut novel. It’s the story of Rose and Johnny. Rose is an ambitious
photographer still seeking recognition for her work, but Johnny wants
commitment and a family. Rose reluctantly gives way. Both would-be parents are
in their 30s and are affluent, but becoming parents seems to be more difficult
than either had ever conceived. They are forced to battle their consciences as
they resort to IVF, but Rose finds that she must take even more desperate
measures to become a mother. According to the publisher, this narrative is very
