Notes from a Liar and her Dog Gennifer Choldenko

A Flavour of the Book: “I look for puke puddles.  There are two on my bedspread and one on the rug.  Yuck.  I carry Pistachio to the laundry basket and get him settled in a nest of dirty socks.  Then I strip my bed and go downstairs for new sheets and rug cleaner.  My mother is in the kitchen, but I know she won’t yell at me for this.  As far as she is concerned, even mass murderers should be allowed to clean their rooms”.

The Authortrek View: Antonia, or “Ant”, as she prefers to be known, can’t stop lying.  The lie that most exasperates her parents, however, is the one that she is not their child, and that her real parents are going to collect her any day soon.  It’s also very frustrating that her sisters, Elizabeth and Kate are impeccably behaved.  One thing’s for sure – Ant certainly doesn’t want to move again – she has found a good friend in the form of the very artistic Harrison, and even her art teacher, nicknamed “Just Carol”, seems to care for her.  However, Ant’s father has a disturbing predilection for changing jobs every five seconds, and every time he does, it means that the whole family has to move to, as he never seems to want to stay in the same city.  And even when they are settled, he spends a great deal of time working at offices far away.  Yet some of the distance between Ant and her parents has been generated by Ant herself, as she never seems to want her parents to be proud of her.  Things come to a head when it becomes all too clear that Ant values her dog’s life more than her own…  Notes from a Liar and her Dog is a very emotionally satisfying read from a great writer, featuring a girl who’s gotten herself in a very big dilemma with seemingly no exit…

Press Reviews: “There are many stories about being disliked and misunderstood when young, but few as sensitive and ultimately triumphant as this” – Nicholas Tucker, Independent
