A Flavour of the Book: “The kiss started firm yet gentle, sweet yet strong, everything I’d expected from Jeremy. Then, as I pressed against him, an edge crept into it, an urgency and a passion that maybe… wasn’t quite what I’d expected. Like being hit with a blast of hot air when I was anticipating a gentle breeze. I threw myself into it like someone who’s been plucked from an icy river, lapping up the hear.”
The Authortrek View: This
is fantastically sexy fantasy thriller.
Jaime Vegas is a famous medium called in to do a TV show with a couple
of other spiritualists in a bid to raise the ghost of Marilyn Monroe. Except that Jaime is being bothered by
ghosts other than Norma Jean. As
Jaime investigates these ghostly children, she becomes convinced that their
murderers may be more earthly foes than the ones that she has previously dealt
with, but none the less deadly for that…
Her investigation leads her into dangerous basements where occult sexual
practices are carried out, but can she rely on her wolfish companion Jeremy Danvers?
I haven’t read any Kelley Armstrong novels before, so it did
take me a time to get used to her world, and the characters that have populated
her previous novels. However, No
Humans Involved has a strong enough story to entrap even the most casual of
readers, so you do not have to have read any of Kelley Armstrong’s previous
books. Jaime’s world, where
werewolves are a reality, is reminiscent of Kit Whitfield’s
Bareback, although I do know that both fictions were independently
derived, and there is a great difference in tone between them: Kelley
Armstrong’s world, despite its horrors, is far more joyous and exuberant. Indeed, the zany and thrilling plot of No
Humans Involved reminds me greatly of Lindsey Davis at the height of her
powers. Kelley Armstrong is a
truly fantastic writer, and I look forward to reading more from her.
