This is a delicious trilogy of short stories. In the not so far future, Mason the farmer is plagued with rats, men in suits, bureaucracy of the worst kind, and forced to write far too many cheques. But Mason is not a conventional man... Faced with the high costs of having to verminate his rats, Mason chooses to go along another path altogether. Evolutionary history is about to change in his farmyard.
These are quite political stories in their subtle
way, and extremely topical. But the mythic tone of these tales should
ensure that they withstand the passing of current agricultural struggles.
I suspect that Neal Asher has gone back to the first precept of writing here:
to write what he knows. I would guess that Neal's day job has
provided him with some fruitful ammunition. But Mason's Rats are
anything but pedestrian - no, they're far too advanced and too well armed to be
that, for these are radical rats, imbibed with Asher's wicked sense of life, be
it wild or civilised.
If anything, these tails suffer from being too
short. Yes, Asher has left us wanting for more, for the brevity of these
stories probably owes a great deal to the way in which Neal Asher is forced to
work. Yes, Neal writes lots of short stories. But he has also
written whole novels which are yet to be published, and which don't deserve to
be even sent to a slush pile. So, publishers, we want more Neal
Asher! In the meantime, Neal Asher will just have to remain as cunning as
the progenitors of his latest published work. He has all the tools he
needs...
