A Flavour
of the Book: “Close as I am to him, I can smell his deodorant, or what I take to be part deodorant, part him. It smells wonderful, sexy, and at the absolute second I register this, he leans over and kisses me on the
lips. Something happens, and I seem to
lose all will: I fall against him - I can feel, briefly, lightly, the outline
of his thighs, his erection, and the imprint my breasts make on his chest.”
The
Authortrek View: This is a truly fantastic first novel from Patricia Debney, which all
kicks off when Marilyn’s son Lewis asks “What happens when you die?” The prose and the plotting are very subtle,
but also deliciously enticing. It’s not
a surprise to discover that Patricia Debney’s short stories have been published
in various anthologies, and that she is an award-winning poet. The prose of Losing You is not that
poetic, so it would appear that Patricia Debney is a master of prose as well as
poetry. Her characterisation is superb,
as Losing You is masterfully split between the narratives of Marilyn and her
friend Hilary, along with very convincing portraits of their husbands. I guess you could say that Patricia Debney
writes in the same milieu as Rachel Cusk, but I would far rather read Patricia
Debney than Cusk. So, hats off to Bluechrome
for recognising another brilliant writer.
