A Flavour of the Book: “There we all are, a crowd of about ten to fifteen people breathing in unison as we watch a man jump out of a window. We’re part of the same machine. One minute, our main concern is the successful negotiation of the journey from sandwich bar back to office without catching anyone else’s eye; the next, we’re holding hands, clutching at strangers’ arms. Oooo…”
The Authortrek View: Leading the Dance is a brilliant
collection of short stories from the always excellent Sarah Salway. I first came across her sublime work on
eastoftheweb.com, and it’s a great to see such a fantastic writer get the
recognition that she truly deserves.
In Blind, a home help with leanings towards kleptomania cleans
the house of a blind man in the nude.
In The Woman Downstairs, a would-be writer keeps her husband’s
mistress locked in the cellar. Jesus and the Aubergines concerns a woman
who laughs out loud in supermarkets, much to the concern of its new manager. Lonesome Tonight features a
young woman called Christina who can’t stop quoting from her namesake,
Christina Rossetti, and she also has a compulsion to collect all those red
rubber bands that postmen discard in the street. Sarah Salway’s prose is simple and elegant, but behind this
excellent prose is hidden many a quiet fear. There is a great deal of subtlety in Sarah Salway’s work,
and she always satisfyingly leaves the reader to do some work with their own
imaginations. Many of these
stories are quite unsettling, and haunting enough so that you will never forget
them. Leading the Dance
proves that Sarah Salway is one of Britain’s best writers.
