Lauren
E. Smith interview, author of
Ashley
Enright Investigations
I was born in Freeport, Long Island, New
York and raised on Long Island. My fictional town of Donnybrook, Maine is
somewhat based upon my hometown on Long Island.
What was it that first
got you into writing and when did you start writing?
I've been writing stories ever since I learned how to write in the first grade!
Ashley Enright Investigations was the first actual book that I've
ever written and submitted for publication. I was inspired to submit it based
upon my 10-year-old nephew's reaction after reading it - he proclaimed it
"the best book I've ever read!"
Which writers have
influenced you the most?
I've enjoyed reading and re-reading To
Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee since I was a child. I was also influenced
by Margaret Mitchell and Dare Wright, whose book Take Me Home has been a
favorite of mine since the first grade!
What kind of things do
you write?
Ashley Enright Investigations is the first in a children's mystery series for
8-12 year-olds. The second book, Ashley Enright and the Mystery at
Miller's Pond was released in January 2007.
What are you working on
now?
Right now, I'm working on the third instalment
of the series, Ashley Enright and the Darnell Diamonds.
What is your writing
day like?
I work full-time, so my writing is done in
the evenings and on weekends and any time I'm waiting for appointments!
What’s the most
exciting thing about writing for you?
I absolutely love inspiring children to
read and write and I thoroughly love my characters and their world!
What’s the most
frustrating thing about writing for you?
The most frustrating thing about writing
is not having enough time to do it!
What’s the best
piece of feedback that you’ve had from your audience?
I've heard from children that they love my
characters and feel that they could be friends with them! I've also heard from
many adults who say that the books remind them of happy memories from their
childhoods.
Do you write for a
particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?
My audience is children 8-12 years-old
(and their parents and grandparents who like to know what their children are
reading!)
11). Do you have
a homepage? Do you have any short stories or poems published online? (If so,
