“Just Like Tomorrow” is the title of Faiza Guene’s debut novel. 15-year-old Doria lives in the misnamed “Paradise Estate” just outside Paris. While her father has gone off to Morocco to find a wife who can give him a boy, her mother has to fend for herself and the family, which is difficult when she doesn’t speak French. Doria’s dismayed when her favourite soap star turns out to be gay, and by the fact that only the hairdressing school wants to take her on. However, her lot is easy when compared to Youssef, who’s been done for dealing drugs and stealing cars, or Samra, whose father keeps her a virtual prisoner. And at least Doria is friends with Hamoudi, the coolest guy on the estate.
