Jose Luis Peixoto was born in
Portalegre, Portugal in 1974. He studied Modern Languages and Literature (specialising
in English and German) at the New University of Lisbon. After graduation, he
worked as a secondary school teacher at a variety of places in Portugal. He
also had prose and poetry published in the DN Jovem supplement. Jose Luis
Peixoto was awarded the Young Creators’ Prize by the Portuguese Institute for
Youth in 1997, 1998, and 2000. In May 2000, his novella, “Morreste-me” (“You
died on me”) was published. His first novel, “Nenhum Olhar” (“Blank Gaze”) was
published in October 2000, for which he was awarded the Jose Saramago Prize for
the best piece of Portuguese fiction written by an author under 35 in 2001.
This year also saw the publication of his book of poetry “A Crianca em Ruinas”
(“The Child in Ruins”). This was followed in 2002 by the simultaneous launch of
his next novel “Uma Casa na Escuridao” (“A House in Darkness”), and its
accompanying volume of poetry, “A Casa, a Escuridao” (“The House, The
Darkness”). All of these works have received critical acclaim, and led to Jose
Luis Peixoto being the first Portuguese author to be invited to stay as
writer-in-residence at Ledig House, New York. Jose is currently working on his
third novel. According to “The Bookseller”, his first 2 novels will be
published in the UK by Bloomsbury.
