Jose Luis Peixoto was born in Portalegre, Portugal in 1974. He studied Modern Languages and Literature (specialising in English and German) at the New University of Lisbon. After graduation, he worked as a secondary school teacher at a variety of places in Portugal. He also had prose and poetry published in the DN Jovem supplement. Jose Luis Peixoto was awarded the Young Creators’ Prize by the Portuguese Institute for Youth in 1997, 1998, and 2000. In May 2000, his novella, “Morreste-me” (“You died on me”) was published. His first novel, “Nenhum Olhar” (“Blank Gaze”) was published in October 2000, for which he was awarded the Jose Saramago Prize for the best piece of Portuguese fiction written by an author under 35 in 2001. This year also saw the publication of his book of poetry “A Crianca em Ruinas” (“The Child in Ruins”). This was followed in 2002 by the simultaneous launch of his next novel “Uma Casa na Escuridao” (“A House in Darkness”), and its accompanying volume of poetry, “A Casa, a Escuridao” (“The House, The Darkness”). All of these works have received critical acclaim, and led to Jose Luis Peixoto being the first Portuguese author to be invited to stay as writer-in-residence at Ledig House, New York. Jose is currently working on his third novel. According to “The Bookseller”, his first 2 novels will be published in the UK by Bloomsbury.
