Joanna Hershon is the author of three novels: Swimming, The Outside
of August
and The German
Bride
(March 2008).
This new novel is a departure for Hershon, as it is meticulously
researched historical fiction, allowing an original glimpse into the American
West. Pat Conroy, (legendary author of,
among other novels, The Prince of
Tides)
recently said, "Joanna Hershon's new
book, The German Bride, is a surprising novel of grace and refinement. It is a tale of the
American West, but unlike any I have ever read before. She enters Willa Cather
territory and does it with a rare elegance and complete originality. I was not
familiar with Joanna Hershon's work when I read this novel and it made me order
her first two books."
Inspired by a little-known period of American history, The German Bride follows Eva Frank,
a Berlin Jewess, who accepts a marriage proposal from Abraham Shein and embarks
on a journey to the wilds of Santa Fe, New Mexico in the 1860s. The German Bride is a gritty glimpse
into the bar rooms and brothels of a lawless frontier territory, where an
unforgettable cast of characters struggle for survival and redemption in the
brutal, glorious desert of the American Southwest.
Joanna
Hershon’s writing has been included in the 2008 literary anthology Brooklyn Was
Mine,
short-listed for the 2007 O. Henry Prize
Stories, and published in One Story,
Post Road, and The Virginia Quarterly Review.
A new serialized story is forthcoming at www.fivechapters.com. She teaches Undergraduate Creative Writing
at Columbia University, and lives in Brooklyn with her husband, the painter Derek
Buckner, and their twin sons.
