Jenny White is the author of “The Sultan’s Seal” and “The
Abyssinian Proof”. Jenny White is a tenured professor of anthropology at
Boston University. Jenny White lived in Turkey for several years (from 1975 to
1978, and 1985 to 1987), which led to her interest in Turkish culture,
especially the lives of Turkish women. She has written several non-fiction
books on Turkey, including “Islamist
Mobilization in Turkey: A Study in Vernacular Politics”, which won the 2003
American Anthropological Association’s Douglass Prize for best book in
Europeanist anthropology and which was widely read in Washington when an
Islamic party came to power in the 2002 elections. She is also the author of “Money Makes
us Relatives: Women’s Labor in Urban Turkey” (1994, 2nd edition 2004). A
trusted resource in understanding the complex relationship between America and
the Middle East, she was most recently quoted in the New York Times (January
30) regarding the removal of the ban on women wearing headscarves in university
classes. Fluent in Turkish, she received her Masters degree in social
psychology from Hacettepe University in Ankara and then began researching 19th
century Turkey. She immersed herself in the culture through interviews and late
nights in the history stacks of the library. “The Sultan’s Seal” is Jenny
White’s debut novel. It is being published in Britain as well and translated
into nine other languages. Jenny White lives in the Boston area.
