Biography (from the publishers): Helen Dunmore was inspired to write the Ingo series by life on the Cornish coast. She spends much of her time writing in her house in Cornwall and so it seemed natural that she should set her stories there. Helen says "It is an area where there is more sea than land and where seals, dolphins, basking sharks, storms, sunfish, gulls and mackerel are as much part of the children's lives as cars and houses. It is a beautiful place and one which I love."

Helen Dunmore is a prolific writer of both adult and children's fiction. Her first children's book, Going to Egypt, was published in 1992. Her first adult novel, Zennor in Darkness, followed in 1993 and won the McKitterick Prize. She went onto write novels including, A Spell of Winter, winner of the inaugural Orange Prize for Fiction and The Siege, which was short listed for both the Orange Prize for Fiction, and the Whitbread Prize for Fiction. Helen has also written numerous award winning poetry collections.

Ingo, the first spellbinding book in the Ingo series, was published in September 2005. The Tide Knot followed in May 2006 and won a Silver Award at the Nestle Children's Book Prize 2006, followed by The Deep in 2007.  She is also the author of the following novels: Burning Bright, Talking to the Dead, Your Blue-eyed Boy, With Your Crooked Heart, Mourning Ruby, House of Orphans and The Seal Cove. Helen Dunmore has also had a number of short story collections published: Love of Fat Men, Ice Cream and Rose, 1944.  She is also the author of the following poetry collections: Apple Fall, The Sea Skater, The Raw Garden, Short Days, Long Nights, Recovering a Body, Secrets, Bestiary, Out of the Blue: Poems 1975-2001, and Glad of These Times.
