Where were you born and raised?
I am proud to say I was born in Ontario and raised in British Columbia.
What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start
writing?
I started writing at The University Of British Columbia where I became an
enthusiastic student of English Literature. I earned a BA in 1998.
Which writers have influenced you the most?
I love Milton, Shakespeare, William Blake, Margaret Atwood, Franz Kafka and
Homer. And many other great writers have inspired me to write.
What kind of things do you write?
I write mostly novels, short stories and poems about schizophrenia which I've
had for 30 years. I also write about mysticism.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a children's novella that is very loosely influenced by the
"Harry Potter" books.
What is your writing day like?
Right now I am writing several hours a day on my new novella but I may spend 1-5
hours a day writing depending on my mood and motivation.
What's the most exciting thing about writing for you?
The most exciting thing about writing for me is identifying with my characters
and feeling in control of my ideas about schizophrenia. I hope to educate
readers about schizophrenia, too.
What's the most frustrating thing about writing for you?
I find it difficult to get enough readers for my novels. Promotion is wearying
and demanding.
What's the best piece of feedback that you've had from your audience?
I feel pleased when people tell me that their schizophrenia is a lot like how
the characters feel in my novels.
Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to
satisfy your own creativity?
I write mainly for the general audience to help ease the stigma of schizophrenia
and to entertain. My creativity is less rewarding if my message isn't helping
others understand the suffering of people with schizophrenia.
