Goodbye Mr
Socialism is a series of very engaging conversations between the Italian
philosopher Antonio Negri and Raf Scelsi.
Negri has previously been imprisoned in Italy after being found “morally
responsible” for the Red Brigades, which led Michel Foucault to remark “Isn’t
he in jail simply for being an intellectual?”
Together, Negri and Scelsi discuss the most pressing issues of the day,
such as the fall of Communism, the EU, the Iraq war, immigration, how the
Internet is changing the conduct of politics, the rise of China, and the
Islamic revolution in Iran. The title
of the book derives from Wolfgang Becker’s Goodbye Lenin!, although
Negri doesn’t share the nostalgia for old Communism displayed in that film. However, his view of the world is still, of
course, from a very far Left perspective.
Despite this, Negri does provide many valuable insights into the state
of the world today, to the extent that this very readable book should appeal
far beyond Cultural Studies and Philosophy students.
