A Flavour of the Book: “There is practically nowhere
in the world where summoning waiters with a whistle or a click of the fingers
is acceptable. Try it, and they
will find ways of making you suffer – especially if you order the soup…”
The Authortrek View: This in an indispensable guide to the
differing customs and cultures around the world, which may prevent travellers
from causing unintentional offence abroad. It may also save your life (nearly
1% of people in Qatar are involved in a road traffic accident annually, by far
the worst place to go for a drive). Going Dutch in Beijing gives details
about many international festivals, and some cultures even closer to home
(don't ask for butter with your bread if you are sharing a meat course with an
Jewish family). And while it is now possible to 'go Dutch' in Beijing, it's
still best to let your host pay if they are middle-aged and set in their ways.
Mark McCrum also lets you know what people mean when they don't say what they
mean. Going Dutch in Beijing could perhaps have been more comprehensive,
as you feel that Mark McCrum has inevitably left a lot out, but this guide is
more than enough to prevent the average Joe from being arrested on his
travels...
