“Giraffe” is the title of J. M. Ledgard’s debut novel. It’s
the story of the largest herd of Giraffes in captivity, which, on the eve of
Mayday in 1975, is culled by the Czechoslovakian secret police for no apparent
reason. Emil, a haemodynamicist (who studies blood flow in vertical animals),
relates their story from when they are captured in Africa, to their arrival in
Czechoslovakia by barge. It’s also the story of Amina, a sleepwalker in a
nation of sleepwalkers, who is entranced by the giraffes, and entrances them by
torch when they are shot by the police. To find out more about the author, you

Ledgard page.
