This is the sequel to the Harrison's highly compelling 'Shades
of Grey' (ISBN 0953115518). Karl Driesler, former German POW, is now happily
settled at Lane Head Farm with Katherine Carter, his English wife. However, a
destructive force appears in the arrival of Karl's son, from his wartime
romance with Ilse, a fervent Nazi. Karl has never known his son, Siegfried,
until Ilse is forced to hand him over to his father, due to her poverty and
wretched life in post-war Germany.
Siegfried
has been brought up to see his father as a traitor to the Nazi cause, and as the
cause of all his suffering, for the boy has been very much abused by his
stepfather. Seeing Karl again reawakens Ilse's love for him, and Katherine
begins to doubt her very attractive husband. Meanwhile, Siegfried conceals
within him a murderous rage, which threatens to drive Karl's still uncertain
temperament to the edge... Caron Harrison has again dared to go where no author
has gone before, in exploring the complex emotions and loyalties of Germans
after the war. If I have one quibble, it's that Ilse's and Siegfried's story to
survive in post-war Germany could almost be a novel in itself. But then I was
also very impatient for Karl and Katherine to reappear. So, I would have
preferred that this novel was a little longer, so that it could cover both stories
in a much more adequate way. Yet Caron Harrison didn't have this luxury, for
again, like 'Shades of Grey', this novel was self-published - which I think is
criminal. So, what I would really like is for a publisher to put this powerful
writer under a liberal contract, for I would very much like to read some more
of her work, and as soon as possible, please!
