This interview with Deborah Ponnaiya was first published in October 2006. Deborah Ponnaiya

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Calcutta, India, and raised all over the country.

What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?

We all were very much into reading at home. My mum used to tell us stories when we were little, and always read to us at bedtime, until we were able to read ourselves. I think that was one of the reasons that I got into writing. I started writing when I was seventeen, and have been writing ever since.

Which writers have influenced you the most?

Far too many to list here! A few I can name, though, include the classical Greek poets, also R.L. Stevenson, Samuel Beckett, Tom Stoppard, T.H. White, Ray Bradbury, J.R.R. Tolkien, Russell Hoban, Joseph Heller, and Lewis Carroll. Oh yes, and that quintessential poet, Bob Dylan.

Where do you stand on the nature v. nurture debate? Were you born a writer, or were there factors in your environment that enabled you to become a writer?

A bit of both, actually. I love words, and the way they can fire the imagination and move people. I thoroughly enjoy sitting down to write and not knowing where a particular story is going to take me. I do think writers have the inherent talent to write, but it depends on the individual to develop it.

There are a lot of courses teaching creative writing nowadays, but do you think that good writing can be taught?

I've never done a creative writing course, so I can't really say. All I've learnt about writing I have learnt from reading.

Have you entered writing competitions? If so, have you won any prizes?

Yes I have, quite a few times, but I've not won any prizes.

What kind of things do you write?

I've written poetry, also a couple of plays, and some short stories, and have a couple of books in progress.

What, for you, is the best piece of prose that you have ever written?

I can't say!

What are you working on now?

Currently I'm working on two manuscripts, both fantasy.

What is your writing day like?

I write when I can get the time, which might be at the end of a working day, on weekends, or on days when there's not a lot going on at work. I'm a partner in an advertising company, so life is pretty busy.

Where would you like to be in 10 years time?

Published, and writing full time.

What’s the most exciting thing about writing for you?

Crossing the line between reality and fantasy, and knowing that anything is possible on the other side.

What’s the most frustrating thing about writing for you?

Not getting enough time to write.

What’s the best piece of feedback that you’ve had from your audience?

"Wow! I can see that in my head!"

Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?

I'm selfish. Having written advertising copy, I decided that this part of writing is for myself primarily.

Do you have a homepage? If so, what’s the URL?

I don't have one yet, but hope to get one soon.
