Darryl Wimberley interview

This Darryl Wimberley interview, author of The King of Colored Town, Dead Man's Bay, Pepperfish Keys, A Tinker's Damn, Strawman's Hammock, and A Rock and a Hard Place, was first published in September 2007.

Where were you born and raised?

Born in St Augustine, Florida raised on Gulf side, northwestern Florida.

What was it that first got you into writing and when did you start writing?

I first wrote a screenplay around 1980 which sold, got representation and had good luck optioning scripts.  I based my first three novels on scripts that had been optioned but not filmed.

Which writers have influenced you the most?

Graham Greene, Hemingway, Margaret Atwood, Robertson Davies, John LeCarre

What kind of things do you write?

I don't know how many, if any authors, alternate between literary and genre novels.  I have been doing that for a while and enjoy great critical reaction to each.

What are you working on now?

A genre work, Kaleidoscope, for The Toby Press.

What is your writing day like?

Disciplined, quarter to eight 'til one-thirty or two.

What's the most exciting thing about writing for you?

Writing.

What's the most frustrating thing about writing for you?

Not writing.

What's the best piece of feedback that you've had from your audience?

I get compliments for an authentic voice.  People assume biography or autobiography (not actually the best compliment to imagination) but I like inhabiting the characters I create.

Do you write for a particular audience, or is your first priority to satisfy your own creativity?

I take my obligation to tell an interesting story very seriously.
